History and Purpose
The Campus Safety Association was founded in 1954 to address the unique safety challenges that are found on a college or university campus setting.
Comparisons are sometimes made – comparing the operation of a college or university to running an industry or a research facility or a service business or even to the running of a small city. And, in fact, somewhat similar situations may be found in each of these settings. But the founders of CSA realized that it is only on the college or university campus that one will find
elements of all of the distinct challenges that industry, research, business, and municipal concerns face.
Since CSA was founded, colleges and universities adjusted to a phenomenal period of growth, a "spurt" that has continued for over 30 years! The Technological Age dawned. Federal agencies imposed what has become an avalanche of regulations. And society became ecologically responsible.
Predictably, in light of these developments, environmental health and safety functions have become more and more integral to the overall success of institutions of higher education.
From the highly technical, such as...disposal of hazardous materials, proper handling of chemicals, general incineration of campus waste, and interpretation of federal regulations...to the most basic of human concerns...insuring a safe working environment for personnel and assuring safe fire egress from dormitories...colleges and universities increasingly rely on their safety professionals.
In 1995, Campus Safety Association changed its name to Campus Safety, Health and Environmental Management Association (CSHEMA). As the professional organization for campus safety specialists, CSHEMA promotes the image and importance of the field itself, defines responsibilities, provides opportunities to learn as well as to mentor, develops skills, and sets up ideal situations for networking. CSHEMA members always have access to the most up-to-the-minute statistics, techniques, regulations, literature, and advice.
