Vital Statistics II:
The further refinement of the CSHEMA bechmarking effort for college and university EH&S Programs

This webinar helped to summarize the findings derived from the previous efforts and will describe the upcoming “Vital Statistics II Initiative” which will soon be launched in cooperation with CSHEMA to further refine the ability to predict industry average program staffing and resourcing.

Successful university environmental health & safety programs function largely in the realm of prevention, so on a good day “nothing happens”. But operating in the field of prevention is challenging because it is extremely difficult to articulate and demonstrate the amount of resources necessary to make “nothing happen”. This challenge is further compounded by the constant turn-over that occurs within universities, wherein our story most be told not only effectively, but repeatedly. The University of Texas School of Public Health has partnered with CSHEMA to conduct a series of pilot projects examining the subset of critical benchmarking predictors that can be used to estimate the industry-average number of EH&S staff and budget for a campus of a given size. These critical predictors were dubbed the “Vital Statistics” and have repeatedly proven to be the most statistically-significant predictors of EH&S program size and resourcing.
