CSHEMA accepts award nominations from January–March each year. Participation is limited to those at member institutions; recipients will are recognized at the Annual Conference in July.

Institutional Awards
Complete Environmental Health and Safety Program Award 

Honors good practice in the areas of:

  • Administrative leadership and organization
  • General safety
  • Fire and life safety
  • Environmental management
  • Biological safety
  • Radiological safety
  • Chemical safety/chemical waste
  • Government relations
  • Emergency preparedness

Programs are recognized at the following levels: Award of Honor (the top level), Award of Merit, Award of Commendation, and the President’s Letter. 


Complete Environmental Health and Safety Program Award for Small Colleges and Universities 

Honors small colleges and universities (defined as having three or fewer EHS professionals in the EHS office) that have created safety programs and incorporated novel and/or original efforts while complying with standardized regulations


Innovation Award 

Recognizes higher education institutions of each constituent type (community colleges, comprehensive and doctoral institutions, research universities, and small institutions) in three areas of business and financial administration: process improvement, resource enhancement, and safety culture


Marketing and Communications Awards

Recognizes campuses that have implemented comprehensive marketing and communications programs, campaigns, or single media initiatives to promote EHS to their communities

Individual Awards
Honorary Life Award

Granted to retired individuals who have made significant and meaningful contributions to EHS programs for at least 10 years as a member of CSHEMA


Campus Leaders Who Care

Recognizes outstanding involvement and support of senior administrators for their understanding of how important environmental stewardship and health and safety issues are to their institutions


Award for Volunteerism Excellence

Honors outstanding volunteer service to CSHEMA based on professionals' commitment,and success over the last 12 months within the Association

Scholarships and Grants
CSHEMA Scholarship

CSHEMA offers a $3,000 scholarship (and a waiver to attend the CSHEMA annual conference) to encourage the study of environmental and occupational health, safety, and related disciplines. The program is open to all college undergraduate students preferably enrolled in majors geared toward an EHS career (such as, but not limited to, environmental science, fire protection, health physics, industrial engineering, industrial hygiene, occupational health, safety, etc.) enrolled in 12 credit hours per semester, trimester, or quarter.


Special Project Grants

Note: CSHEMA is not accepting applications for this in 2020.

CSHEMA will consider proposals for innovative special projects (e.g., trainings, research, etc.) that support the Association's mission, affect the broader EHS community, and can be sustained/disseminated after the project's completion. The Board of Trustees will determine the available funds for this program annually and the number of awards will be dependent on the funds available and the size of the grant requests received.
