CSHEMA Takes Action on the NIH’s Biosafety Modernization Initiative
October 1, 2025—The Campus Safety, Health, and Environmental Management Association (CSHEMA) is pleased to announce its collaboration with the National Institutes of Health (NIH) on the Biosafety Modernization Initiative. As the pre-eminent leadership organization representing the environmental health and safety (EHS) profession in higher education, CSHEMA represents EHS and biosafety leaders and experts from over 450 member institutions. Since its founding as the Campus Safety Association in 1954, CSHEMA has remained the only organization focused entirely on serving and advocating for EHS professionals in higher education.
CSHEMA supports NIH’s commitment to modernizing their biosafety regulatory frameworks to better align with the rapid progression of scientific research. In addition to encouraging our members to attend public NIH-sponsored Phase I regional listening sessions, CSHEMA will provide an opportunity for our members to engage with the NIH in a CSHEMA-hosted listening session. This unique opportunity for engagement will ensure that the perspectives of CSHEMA members are considered as the NIH progresses forward in this initiative.
CSHEMA looks forward to collaborating with the NIH on the creation of updated policies and guidelines under the Biosafety Modernization Initiative.
