CSHEMA Takes Action on the NIH’s Biosafety Modernization Initiative
October 1, 2025—The Campus Safety, Health, and Environmental Management Association (CSHEMA) is pleased to announce its collaboration with the National Institutes of Health (NIH) on the Biosafety Modernization Initiative. As the pre-eminent leadership organization representing the environmental health and safety (EHS) profession in higher education, CSHEMA represents EHS and biosafety leaders and experts from over 450 member institutions.
CSHEMA Joins Amicus Brief Opposing NIH Indirect Cost Reimbursement Rate Cap
June 27, 2025—The Campus Safety Health and Environmental Management Association (CSHEMA) announces its official support for an amicus brief filed by the National Association of College and University Business Officers (NACUBO), COGR, and 16 other organizations. The amicus brief supports ongoing lawsuits challenging a National Institutes of Health (NIH) policy that caps indirect cost rate reimbursements for institutions of higher education at 15%. This action builds upon CSHEMA's earlier advocacy efforts, as outlined in our February 20, 2025 press release, "CSHEMA Supports Academic Organizations in Advocacy to Reverse NIH Indirect Funding Cuts."
CSHEMA Comment to EPA Highlights Efficacy of Existing Lab Controls for Methylene Chloride and Calls for Harmonized Regulations
June 25, 2025 – The Campus Safety Health and Environmental Management Association (CSHEMA) today submitted a comprehensive comment to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) supporting an 18-month extension for the Methylene Chloride Rule (40 CFR 751 subpart B) for non-federal laboratories. CSHEMA's comment provides critical data demonstrating the effectiveness of current laboratory controls and highlights the burden of duplicative regulations.
CSHEMA Unveils Methylene Chloride Rule Toolkit for Higher Education EHS Professionals
As higher education institutions navigate the regulatory shift brought on by the EPA’s Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) methylene chloride (dichloromethane, DCM) rule, the Campus Safety, Health, and Environmental Management Association (CSHEMA) has been proactively leading efforts to support Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) professionals in achieving compliance. CSHEMA designated a special working group of academic safety and industrial hygiene leaders from across the country to develop a comprehensive resource toolkit for colleges and universities to utilize.
CSHEMA Supports Academic Organizations in Advocacy to Reverse NIH Indirect Funding Cuts
The Campus Safety, Health, and Environmental Management Association (CSHEMA) is proud to announce its support for and offer of collaboration with several national associations dedicated to advancing higher education, research, and public service, including the Association of American Universities (AAU), the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities (APLU), the American Council on Education (ACE), the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC), the Council on Governmental Relations (COGR), and the National Council of University Research Administrators (NCURA), in their advocacy efforts to reverse the recent cuts to NIH indirect funding.
