How long have you worked in EHS?

25+ years, but who is counting!!

How did you get into EHS?

My first job out of college was with OSHA! I was an Industrial Hygienist. After leaving OSHA, I did IH work at a military installation before falling in love with Higher Education working at Princeton University EHS.

How long have you worked at your current institution?

A little over 6 years.

Best career advice?

Don’t be afraid to fail. I did not like this advice! In truth, as I forced myself to imagine an outcome resulting failure, I quickly realized I would be able to cope and it has pushed me outside my comfort zone to go for it!

Conflict Management and Resolution Workshop | Description, Learning Objectives, Design, Exercise Prompts (as questions), and Assessing/Evaluating

Presented by: Jonathan Klane, M.S.Ed., CIH, CSP, CHMM, CIT – Director of Risk Management and Safety Education, BioRAFT and PhD student at ASU in Human/Social Dimensions in Science/Technology

Description:  How many times have you found that a safety issue is actually a conflict that just happens to be about safety?  Let's face it - in safety we deal with a lot of conflict management needs - it's just part of what we do.  In this workshop we'll look at the nature of conflicts (they can be helpful if approached the right way), what works and what doesn't, communication and active listening skills, perspective vs. perception, human behavior and decision making, and how to build up your skills in these areas. We'll engage in active learning with practices, discussion on the learning, some role playing, and have fun throughout the day.

Learning Objectives:
At the end of the workshop, active learners should be able to:

  • Describe the nature of conflicts and its pros and cons
  • List several beneficial traits for a conflict manager to have and use
  • Compare and contrast perspective and perception as well as human decision making
  • Demonstrate better conflict management skills

Meet the speaker: Jonathan’s 30+ year career spans many diverse roles and settings including Safety Director for two Colleges of Engineering, teaching EHS and management courses for two colleges back east, and 20+ years as a consultant and trainer.  He now focuses on the people side of safety including researching risk perceptions and the use of narratives to affect them as well as teaching soft skills such as conflict management.
