Volunteer
Volunteering gives you greater visibility in the EHS profession, offers you a new way to apply and enhance your skills, and enables you to expand your professional network to learn about innovative best practices.
CSHEMA offers the following types of volunteer positions for members. You can indicate interest in serving by completing the Volunteer Interest Form. Most volunteer positions are appointed by the president annually in July following the Annual Conference.
Leading Volunteers
Leading volunteers determine and advance strategic directions, govern over long-term goals, represent the association to other members, and set the tone for the member experience.
Planning Volunteers
Planning volunteer positions work well for those interested in collaborating to create member experiences such as events, research, fundraising, and other opportunities.
Serving Volunteers
These volunteers serve by supporting peer networking and resource sharing, collaborating on projects that meet a specific need, or communicating the value of CSHEMA.
Contributing Volunteers
Contributing volunteers curate content, review materials to help make decisions, share expertise to build credibility, and welcome participants at events.

Conference Planning Team
Provide leadership in planning CSHEMA’s premier educational and networking event. Individuals serve less than one year, the pace of which hastens between February and July. Responsibilities include:
- Crafting a schedule that balances the Annual Conference's educational, networking, and social purposes.
- Identifying keynote speakers of interest to CSHEMA participants.
- Participating in monthly conference calls and a site visit (paid by CSHEMA) to the conference location.

Symposium Planning Team
Volunteering on the planning committee for a CSHEMA Symposium will help you make greater connections with colleagues in your area, provide an opportunity for your staff to present their expertise and offers an excellent time to showcase exciting projects and successes from your campus. Working together with the CSHEMA Central Office, the planning committee is responsible for:
- Curating high quality and in-demand content that meets the needs of EHS professionals in the surrounding area.
These are ad hoc groups, created and filled as needed.
Professional Development Committee
Develop core competencies for the EHS profession and design year-round programmatic efforts to meet those needs. Individuals serve one-year terms beginning in July at the Annual Conference. Responsibilities include:
- Collaborating with other volunteer groups to create a calendar for online learning.
- Encouraging professionals to share their expertise through presentations at the Annual Conference and Symposia.
The president selects team members annually in July.
Awards Committee
Recognize the innovative work and leadership within the EHS profession. Generally, this committee initially meets monthly but will need to come together more frequently during the first and second quarter of the calendar year. Responsibilities include:
- Ensuring awards meet the needs of the membership and the profession.
- Proposing changes and developing new awards as necessary.
- Evaluating award entries based on criteria.

Scholarship Committee
Engage students as aspiring safety professionals and members who are seeking to further their education in the environmental health and safety field through scholarship opportunities. Responsibilities include:
- Ensure scholarship opportunities meet the needs of students and members.
- Plan and participate in activities to help fund CSHEMA’s scholarship program.
- Evaluate applications and select scholarship recipients based on criteria.

Conference Education Committee
Provide leadership in planning the educational program for CSHEMA’s annual conference. Responsibilities include:
- Develop a well-rounded technical session and professional development offering.
- Work with representatives of CSHEMA’s Communities of Practice to solicit and select relevant session proposals.
- Review abstract submissions and select educational sessions that will engage members and enhance the overall value of the annual conference.

Presenter
Sharing your professional knowledge with others is a great way to hone your expertise and teach others. CSHEMA has opportunities for volunteers at all competence levels to create helpful and important content for the EHS profession. Some include:
- Webinar presenter (typically a one-hour event online)
- Deliver technical and educational content at an in-person meeting (typically 30 minutes to 1 hour in person)
- Teach a professional development course (extended periods of time, delivered online or in person)

Board of Trustees
Help establish and further the strategic direction of the Association. Board members participate in a weekly conference call and up to two in-person, multiday meetings annually (paid by CSHEMA). Terms are three years and begin at the CSHEMA Annual Conference in July. The Board of Trustees consists of the president, vice president, treasurer, recording secretary, immediate past president, and six directors. Each year, two directors and the vice president will be elected; the treasurer and recording secretary are elected every three years, but never in the same election cycle.
Responsibilities include:
- Advancing the strategic vision and core values of the Association
- Directing the work of various volunteer committees and teams
- Reviewing the Association’s budget Performing some ceremonial duties, such as speaking at various functions or representing the Association to outside groups
NOMINATE A MEMBER FOR THE 2025-2026 BOARD OF TRUSTEES
Community of Practice Leader
Foster innovation and networking within the membership. Typically, each community has two co-leaders who each serve two-year terms. Responsibilities include:
- Serving as a resource in helping members maximize the use of the community of practice.
- Monitoring, promoting, and creating new threads for ongoing discussion and sharing in the online forum with the community of practice.
- Contributing to the educational goals of the community of practice through relevant online learning programs, developing resources, proposing educational sessions, etc.
- Serving as the primary point of contact for planning, promoting, and facilitating community events at the Annual Conference.
Communities are responsible for self-selecting their leaders annually.
Task Force Leader
Volunteers on a task force are charged with completing a specific project with defined outcomes. This could include researching best practices and recommending a course of action or the development of a new member benefit. Task forces are generally small, nimble, and narrow in focus. The leader of the task force is charged with keeping it on track, delegating tasks, and ensuring defined work is completed. Task force responsibilities might include:
- Research and/or benchmarking.
- Regular task force meetings conducted online.
- Working in ambiguity.
- Creation of written reports, articles, or other resources.
- Presentation of materials, research, or other findings.
Task forces are appointed as needed.
Serving Volunteers

Advocacy Committee
Communicate with members about government regulations affecting the EHS community. The Advocacy Council meets regularly depending on pending legislation and its relevance to members. Responsibilities include:
- Monitoring legislation affecting the EHS profession.
- Recommending to the Board of Trustees a legislative agenda that represents issues of importance to members.
- Recommending how and when CSHEMA should officially comment or address a particular topic.
- Communicating with members about the process and outcomes of regulatory action.

Membership Committee
Expand CSHEMA’s professional community. This committee meets monthly and spends some time outside of meetings making phone calls, interfacing with the annual conference planning committee, etc. Responsibilities include:
- Welcoming new members.
- Sharing information with members considering joining CSHEMA.
- Contacting non-renewing members.
- Monitoring and recommend changes to the CSHEMA dues structure.
The president selects team members annually in July.
Task Force Member
- Research and/or benchmarking.
- Regular task force meetings conducted online.
- Working in ambiguity.
- Creation of written reports, articles, or other resources.
- Presentation of materials, research, or other findings.
Nominations Committee
Serve with former CSHEMA Presidents to identify candidates for the elected positions of Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, and At-Large Member, on the CSHEMA Board of Trustees. Responsibilities include:
- Evaluate nominations by members for open positions on the Board of Trustees based on criteria.
- Identify the most qualified and committed individuals to lead the Association.
- Provide a slate of candidates to the Board of Trustees and Executive Director that is representative of all CSHEMA members.
The President selects two members to serve on this committee with the three most recent former CSHEMA Presidents annually.
